J.Y.: The Hiring Process

Shoutout to the nigga DJ Steph Floss for putting me on this nigga from New Jersey, J.Y. I took a whole weekend to take in his ‘tape before I gave him a proper review…and that’s only because I’ve never heard of this artist. His metaphors catch you off guard if you are not listening, and actually cares about the music, so from my assessment, he will be around for awhile. My description of J.Y. is this: his voice is similar to Ya Boy & The Game, but has a combination of flow between Young Chris and Ransom. From listening to the The Hiring Process, he is the best thing to happen to New Jerse since Joe Budden, which he also has featured on the ‘tape. Everyone, lookout for the homie J.Y.

Mac Miller: K.I.D.S.

A white boy kickin’ incredibly dope shit. Well that’s what K.I.D.S. stands for. Kickin’ Incredibly Dope Shit. He from Pittsburgh, and he have some buzz and talent, so you know Wiz Khalifa fucks with him. Actually, he comes in the same cloth as Wiz Khalifa. His music is basically just doing whatever the fuck he wants. Rather it be smoking weed or getting fly or getting some chick to get at him. It’s basically all the same subject matter as Wiz Khalifa. It’s just another way he says it. Maybe you don’t fuck with it, but I fuck with it.

Ghost Wridah: In Love With My Future

Going on twitter, I see a lot of people talking about this nigga Ghost Wridah, so I hit this nigga up personally and I asked him to send me a link where to get his last project, and he was like, this is where you go. So here I am listening to it and so far, I’m definitely impressed. He should be picked up as soon as possible. Given the time, he’ll blow up. This is might be a bit much, but he reminds of a 3rd Coast version of Kanye West because of his beat selection and his flow. Look out for Ghost Wridah. Because I think he is candidate for 2011 XXL Top 10 Freshmen.

Curt@!n$: The Dissertation

Anybody who has their mixtape on nahright.com or 2dopeboyz.com, I have to at least give them a chance. I don’t have any information on this dude, but listening to Curt@!n$, he has a rough East Coast flow mixed with clever punchlines. Wait…hold up….he just said he was Brooklyn, so I was right. LOL. The way he goes about this mixtape, I feel like there is an undertone of the undertone. Well dissertation means “a written essay or thesis, which is written by one a candidate for the degree of Doctor of Philosphy.” So this “Dissertation” must be his philosophy on his life as the cover for the mixtape is a book. With that said, this is a clever way to get his name out as just signed a deal with Warner Bros. however, most people won’t get it. This is mixtape is only for “certain people” which is a shame because, he’s very talented.

Tracks to look out for:
4) 2 Sports Cars feat. Dom Kennedy
7) The Gentrification
8) Crime Heights 11213
9) Letter to the People pt.4

Laws: Overtime 5:01

Laws: 5:01: Overtime
One day, my homeboy, Tristen (Yung Yella…for now), was like you got that new Laws. I’m like, who the fuck is Laws? He has a good ear for good music, not wack shit, so I was like fuck it. So here I am listening to 5:01: Overtime right now this second while I type this up. But before all this, I did some research on dude. Laws is signed to J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League. If you have heard the last couple Rick Ross albums, their part of the reason why Ross is where he’s at, and that’s definitely a good look for a rookie. Listening to Laws, he sounds like a young Eminem without the insanity. He has a single out for this ‘tape called Hold You Down feat. Emilio Rojas & BigK.R.I.T. If he continues with this momentum that he has built for himself, he’s going to be a top rookie. Watch out for the dude Laws.

Tracks to look out for:
3) Hold You Down feat. Big K.R.I.T. & Emilio Rojas
5) Audio Savior
12) Vintage Futuristic 2
13) Want It All
14) Flashback
15) Shining

Balance: We All In

Straight out the Bay, is the nigga Balance. If you’ve never heard of him (which you probably haven’t) you got to at least say you have talent if you have DJ Ill Will and your “unheard of” right? Actually Balance has been out for awhile, he just been under the underground in the Bay and he’s out west. Now there is one drawback which has probably kept him back, which is his voice. It’s very plain and if you’re not listening to what he’s saying, then you probably think he sucks, which is far from the truth. Look out for the dude Balance.

9) Fasho feat. Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock & Freeway
6) Bootleg Liquor feat. Uni, Fashawn & Mistah FAB
5) Only In California feat. Taje, Glasses Malone & Chevy Jones
7) Happy Endings feat. Jimmie Reign

Smoke Dza: George Kush da Button

Ok, this the last time you’ll hear from Smoke Dza on this blog because what I’ve been seeing on Twitterland and other blog sites, Smoke Dza has gained quite a following. With that said, I now deem him worthy to be on that rookie cover XXL. Even though, this whole entire mixtape is about smoking weed, you know something? I don’t give a fuck. Then listening to this mixtape, I was completely wrong and showed a more diversied (don’t know if I spelled that right, but fuck it) artist. I love to hear new talent and I love to hear mixtapes that sound like both. Smoke Dza fit both and is something to look for. He’s also a different type of New York rapper and he’s doing himself, making good music.

3) Etc., Etc. feat. Currensy & Big K.R.I.T.
1) Continental Kush Breakfast feat. Den 10
6) The Secret feat. Big K.R.I.T.
7) Good Talk feat. Dom Kennedy
9) I’m Your Pusha feat. June Summers
13) It Ain’t My Fault feat. Mickey Factz

Kendrick Lamar

Before I get into the homie Kendrick Lamar, the name of the mixtape is Kendrick Lamar. Now. Lol. Introducing Kendrick Lamar out of Jay Rock’s camp Top Dog Entertainment. His name used to be K-Dot but he has developed into more of a mature artist and I that probably led him to using his full name. What I like about Kendrick Lamar is choice of subject matter and his choice lyricism and beat selection. Everything chosen on this ‘tape seemed to geared to showcasing his abilities as an artist. For me, it worked. He shows certain views on different things such as faith, love, and vanity. I pray that Jay Rock drops his album “Follow Me Home,” so Kendrick Lamar can get his chance.

3) P&P feat. Ab-Soul

1) Is It Love? feat. Angela McClusky

8) Uncle Bobby & Jason Keaton feat. Javonte

9) Faith

10) Trip

14) Let Me Be

The Radikalz: Dope Times at Radikalz

The Radikalz. I know these dudes. But I wouldn’t put any bullshit on my blog because that would make me look wack, so with that said, this is not a biased opinion. This is a very conceptual mixtape. I first found about this group coming out of Phatkaps Boutique chilling with Terrance (Rocsteady) and he pulled out his iPhone and started playing songs for me. I already knew my nigga Max was a spitter, but he also played a song with Jay L, Phresh & AC on it. Later on, like a week later, I went into the studio to see how they work. Terrence is a genius, so look out for him as upcoming mogul. Yeah, I was the first to say it. Then listening to Trell, Phresh, AC & Jay L are also some vicious spitters. The next mixtape to come out of the Radikalz is Jay L, so watch for them.

Tracks to look for:
3) Lola (Mad Maxx)
7) Radikalz Roll Call (AC, Jay L & Mad Maxx)
8) Deuces (remix) (Phresh, Rocsteady, Jay L, Trell & AC)
10) Lunchtime (skit) (Rocsteady, Mad Max, AC & Jay L)
15) Homie, Lover, Friend feat. Emily Young (AC & Jay L)
17) Radikalz Roger That feat. Matic Lee & Ice Cold Jay (AC)

Na'Tee: Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?

Na’Tee is a crazy spitter who is better than most dudes in the rap game as she demonstrates in the very first track as throws punchline after punchline. Acapella. During this acapella, she throws a shot at Wayne. I’m not going to tell you what she says, you just got to listen. Good shot giving other underground chicks (Babs Bunny from Brooklyn, NY and Ebony Eyes from St. Louis) a chance to extend their fan base and their listening crowd. Listening to Na’ Tee, she understands the “old” reason for a mixtape, which is demonstrate how hard she goes on any beat that you throw at her, but sometimes I wish she would make more songs because that’s what is going to get her signed. But regardless, labels are going to regret when she blow up. Nicki Minaj isn’t the only chick who can spit with niggas.

Tracks to look out for:
1) The Reservation
2) Good Morn'n
12) Death B4 Dishonor
17) Stay
20) Hold On

Smoke Dza: Substance Abuse

Cut from the same cloth as Currensy & Wiz Khalifa, Smoke Dza is always “that loud.” But just like his counterparts, he actually has talent, which makes me appreciate him. He actually goes hard. Listening with a smile, I was like, “Word.” Johnny Shipes is building him a nice little team over at Cinematic Music. Along with Dza, he also has Nipsey Hussle & Big K.R.I.T. signed over there too. I don’t have that much info on Dza, so I’ll end on this note: Fuck with this nigga!

Tracks to look out for:
2) Watch Me
6) Divine Music
10) Time Machine feat. Numbers & Cory Gunz
17) Marley & Me feat. Devin the Dude, Currensy & June Summers
18) Living Your Dreams feat. June Summers

Rain: American Dreamin’ 3

I’ve been listening to this nigga for the longest. I don’t understand why he is NOT ON YET. He is one of the few artists who can give truly honest with himself. I compare him to artists like Beanie Sigel & Rick Ross. Not because of how he raps, but because of his honest of himself (i.e. Sigel) and his choice of production (i.e. Ross). He can make hits too (peep Chasing the Nightlife). He’s getting close to where he supposed to be, which is why most of these songs deal with a lot of pain of his former life mixed in with how he deals with life today. If major labels don’t pick this nigga up, he going to fuck them the long way.

Tracks to look out for:
3) Tears of a Man
4) Everything I Love
9) May Not Be
10) Watching the Streets
13) Gangsta Music

Emilio Rojas: The Natural

Straight from the Puerto Rican line of Big Pun, Emilio Rojas is a straight New York spitter. Comes out the gate introducing himself and giving you a history lesson of him. For the first couple of songs, you can hear the pain in his voice and that’s something I can really appreciate. Just listening to dude, you can tell that hip hop is something he was born to do and that it’s “natural” to him. His flow more than confident, it’s cocky & arrogant, but fuck it…I like it. Give Rojas a year or more and he should be the leader of New York rookies and should be looked at as top rookie overall.

Tracks to look out for:
1) The Countdown
4) Sympathy For the Devil
9) Runway
11) The Rest

Dom Kennedy: From the Westside With Love

Weird & simple. The first thing I thought when the beat came on. But if it’s like that, then for me, it’s good. Listening to the tape, he has an excellent ear for beats, which is definently going to serve him in the long run. When you first listen to the intro, I was looking at my dude like what the fuck you got me listening to? He keep saying the same shit. But at the end of the track, I was fucking with it, so I was bitching for nothing. Lol. Then the level rises another notch with the song, “Still Me.” This is mixtape could be an album. Which is why we have to get the game back to where it should be. Not about hit singles, but about artists who can make timeless. Long-term shit, not after Jordan. Not bullshit. Dom Kennedy is just that. Long-term shit.

Tracks to look out for:
2) Still Me
7) Locals Only
9) Play On feat. Skeme
10) The Hotels feat. Carter
14) Speaker Phone

Big K.R.I.T.: K.R.I.T. Wuz Here

If there was ever away to mix T.I. & Pimp C together. Welcome to K.R.I.T. New Def Jam signee. My homeboy Yella put me on him and I’ve been bumping his ‘tape for a good couple of months. For all Currensy fans, he ended up on his album “Pilot Talk.” When I started listening to the ‘tape, I thought that he should of done without his guest appearance and the first track would’ve been good with one verse. Or maybe “Country Shit” (which is the next track) should’ve been the intro track. It sounds like he really introducing himself to the world with that track. Then with each song afterwards, you can really tell how hungry dude really is, as shows some part of his life. If the game was like it was in the late 90s, early 2000s, this mixtape would be an album. Everybody lookout for K.R.I.T. on XXL Freshmen for 2011.

Tracks to look out for:
3) Just Touched Down
6) See Me On Top
11) No Wheaties feat. Currensy & Smoke Dza
12) Something
16) 2000 & Beyond
